Online Learning Vs Traditional Learning

What is online learning?

Online learning is a modern education method where students complete courses virtually rather than attending in-person classes in physical classrooms. Teachers will use digital tools such as video lessons, virtual classrooms, and online assessments to teach courses.

What are the considerations of either?

Cost

Due to its solely virtual environment, online learning tends to be more cost effective than traditional learning. It does not require physical spaces or physical materials to teach courses, meaning there are overall fewer fees that are associated with attending in-person classes at a physical campus.

Structure

Compared to traditional learning, online education offers greater flexibility, remote access, and self-paced study options, making it ideal for learners who need convenience and adaptability.

Environment

While traditional learning options have a more rigid schedule, online learning is much more flexible to the learner’s needs. Online learners have the ability to learn on their own schedule and in their own spaces. Whether at home, in a coffee shop, or at a local library, online learners can create an environment that best supports their productivity and focus.

Learning Style

Online learning works well for self-motivated students who prefer independent, technology-based learning. It often relies on videos, readings, and discussion boards. Traditional learning benefits students who learn best through face-to-face instruction, hands-on activities, and real-time interaction with teachers.

Community

While different from traditional, in-person learning opportunities, online learning options are still able to cultivate community through discussion forums, group projects, and virtual meetings where collaboration is highly encouraged or required.

Why Might You Choose Online Learning

  • You prefer to work in your own environment
  • You prefer flexibility with self paced learning
  • You want an education, but already have many other responsibilities to attend to
  •  You enjoy working independently rather than collaboratively
  • You want an affordable and timely education

Why Might You Choose to Learn in a Classroom

  • You prefer an immersive learning experience
  • You prefer to have a structure set for you.
  • You prefer to have a community of like-minded people around you
  • You learn better in a physical classroom setting
  • You have a hard time with time management and prefer a predetermined or more structured schedule.
  • You prefer face-to-face interaction and getting to know your peers in-person

What makes in person education difficult to replicate? Is it worth replicating?

In-person education is difficult to replicate because it relies on physical presence to allow for face-to-face interactions and hands-on experiences. This in-person experience allows for stronger peer relationships, accountability, and a sense of routine for most students. This level of engagement is much harder to achieve in a virtual setting. However, in-person learning is not necessarily more or less valuable than online learning, it simply depends on the student’s situation and preferences. Online learning allows for more independent students to manage their own schedules and classes, while students who need more structure and routine can opt for in-person learning opportunities.
